Shopping for Health Insurance

Shop around for Health Insurance QuotesEven if you think you don’t need health insurance, the truth is you do. When you decide it’s time to get it, there are a few things you will want to know before you pick your coverage. Remember, your decision in choosing health insurance not only affects you, but your loved ones as well. Here are reasons for individual health insurance.

Before you go out and buy individual health insurance, you should check to see if your current employer or even an organization or association you belong to provides it. This would be the most affordable way to get health insurance. You also want to know exactly what kind of coverage you want and need. For instance, a female in her early twenties, healthy, no children and single will be looking for different coverage than a forty-eight year old cancer survivor male with a family.

There are three basic choices you have to choose from. The first is the most expensive and the hardest to get. It’s called Fee-for-Service and it has the best coverage. The next one is the most common known as Managed care plans. HMO’s and PPO’s fall under this category. Although these types of coverages area t a lower cost than others, the choices you have for doctors, dentists, and other services are limited. The last type is Association-based health coverage. Depending on what kind of memberships you have to professional organizations or religious or trade organizations, you might be able to get insured. Not all associations offer health insurance but it’s worth looking into.

Finding affordable coverage is not enough, you also have to know what the insurance plan covers. You want to know how much the monthly payments are going to be and how much it will be annually. You will want to know if there is a deductible and how much it will be, how much your doctor visits will cost and if the plan covers medicine, vision and dental. These are just a few of the things you will want to consider but it’s very easy to forget your basic needs and the questions you want answered. Before you start looking you will want to make a list of all the things you need, the things you want and all the questions you think you need the answers to. Keep in mind that just because you talk to someone doesn’t mean you are obligated to buy their insurance. If they don’t have what you want, don’t settle for it, keep looking. If you can’t seem to find any plans that match what you are looking for, you might want to consider using a broker. They represent different companies and can help you find the best policy.

If you don’t think you have the time to shop for health insurance just remember that you can’t afford not to. Even if you have never had to go to the emergency room or have never been sick a day in your life, the truth is sooner or later there will come a time when you need coverage. So take your health seriously and get health insurance.
